"To help promote the health, safety, and well-being of all Blackfeet Youth through private funding with sponsors and donors both on and off the Blackfeet Reservation."
The Blackfeet Youth Development program was started after a major U.S. charity was no longer able to continue thier sponsorship program on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.
There were over 600 children in the previous program. Seeing a need for a youth sponsorship program, Ted Hoyt met with the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council and received a commitment from them for a building and some resources. The Blackfeet Youth Development program opened its doors in January of 2005.
Of an estimated 15,000 Blackfeet in the world today, approximately 8,600 live in Blackfeet Country.
Acknowledged as one of the most powerful tribes on the North American plains, the Blackfeet, Aamsskaapipiikanii, are part of the traditional Blackfoot Confederacy made up of four nations presently living in northern Montana and the province of Alberta, Canada.
The name Blackfeet originates from the distinctive black hue that their moccasins were either painted or perhaps darkened by prairie fires.
